In 1948, aircraft approaching Berlin had little room for delay or confusion. The Berlin Airlift succeeded because each flight followed a shared schedule, route, and unloading process. Church transportation works on the same principle: give every member one current bus assignment, one pickup point, and one place to check for changes.

What the Berlin Airlift learned about reliable movement

The operation left little tolerance for improvisation in the air. Major General William H. Tunner, who took command of the combined airlift operation, had already managed large-scale military air transport during the Second World War. In Berlin, he pushed for disciplined scheduling, standardized procedures, and fast turnarounds.
One rule captured the operating philosophy. If a pilot missed an approach, the aircraft returned to its home base instead of circling and disrupting the sequence behind it. That decision could feel wasteful when viewed as one missed delivery. Across thousands of flights, it protected the whole system from compounding delays.
The United States Air Force documents the Berlin Airlift and Tunner’s role in its historical accounts. By the time the blockade ended in 1949, the operation had shown that extraordinary transport reliability could come from ordinary disciplines repeated consistently.
